From New Zealand to Rio, cities around the world lit the lights of hope for a better year, amidst global challenges, silence in countries hit by tragedies, and spectacles that brought millions of people together under the same sky...

New Year 2026 was welcomed with light, color and excitement in every corner of the globe, from the easternmost islands of the Pacific to the great metropolises of America and Europe. Celebrations began in the early hours of December 31 in Kiribati, Tonga and New Zealand, where thousands of people gathered to watch fireworks displays that lit up the sky over Auckland.

In Sydney, the traditional celebration on the Harbour Bridge became even more symbolic, as the city held a minute's silence for the victims of a gun attack in December, combining solemnity with spectacle.

In East Asia, Seoul preserved the ancient rite of ringing the bell at Bosingak Temple – a tradition that symbolizes the removal of evil and the welcoming of a new beginning. Meanwhile, in Busan, a formation of drones created the image of a red horse in the sky, a symbol of the new year according to the Asian lunar calendar. In China, celebrations included traditional performances, with drums and banners near the Great Wall. In stark contrast, Hong Kong, affected by a November tragedy that killed dozens, canceled fireworks and organized a light and music show instead, with the motto “New Hopes, New Beginnings.”

Europe celebrated the turn of the year in a variety of ways, from massive celebrations in London and Paris to more subdued approaches in Greece and Cyprus. In London, tens of thousands of people watched the grand spectacle along the banks of the River Thames, with lights illuminating the sky around Big Ben. Edinburgh celebrated with the Hogmanay festival, a tradition that includes music, fireworks and dancing. In Dublin, the streets were filled with street performers and a public concert at Dublin Castle. Athens and Nicosia replaced fireworks with drones and quiet pyrotechnics, out of respect for the most vulnerable communities and to reduce noise pollution. Berlin celebrated with massive crowds at the Brandenburg Gate, while cities such as Barcelona and Rome were filled with live music, symbolic races and laser shows.

In tense areas, the turn of the year had a different atmosphere. In Kiev, due to the ongoing Russian aggression, there were no organized activities, while citizens prayed for a calmer year. In Moscow, Red Square remained closed to the public and fireworks were canceled for security reasons. And yet, the symbolism of the turn of the year was also experienced in silence.

In the Middle East, Dubai hosted one of the world's most spectacular shows. The Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest building, was illuminated by lasers and fireworks, while the choreographed waterfalls of the Dubai Fountain accompanied traditional and modern melodies. Thousands of people from around the world welcomed the turn of the year there as an incomparable experience.

In the Western Hemisphere, New York City hosted one of the most internationally celebrated traditions: the ball drop in Times Square. Watched by millions of people around the world, the ceremony included musical performances, lights, confetti and moments of reflection. In Rio de Janeiro, Copacabana Beach hosted one of the world's largest celebrations, where people dressed in white, a traditional symbol of luck and peace, lit up the waterfront with fireworks, music and dancing until the early hours of the morning.

Although in different forms, the celebration of New Year 2026 once again demonstrated the universality of this moment: the human desire for renewal, togetherness, and a better tomorrow. From urban metropolises to small towns, from traditional to technological approaches, and from street joy to solemn silence, the world showed that, despite everything, hope never fades on the night of the change of years./ Pamphlet
