Ilir Meta has been in detention for 18 months and his last public appearances were those of his arrest on October 21, 2024.
But the former head of state appeared transformed in his first court hearing. In these months in isolation, he has lost weight and undergone a change in appearance.
This Monday, in the first session that was broadcast online, Meta appeared behind the glass cage, while his ex-wife Monika Kryemadhi and lawyer Kujtim Cakrani were next to him.
The representative of the Albanian Helsinki Committee, Zylyftar Bregu, has revealed on 'Top Story' some details about the former president of Albania's life behind bars, which are thought to be related to his health condition.
" Due to an agreement I have with the Albanian Helsinki Committee, I cannot reveal many details. Some things, given the great interest in his health, I can say in a certain way."
I was also a little surprised when I met him about his physical condition. During the conversation with him, but also from the knowledge I have, I can explain it a little.
There are prisoners who share a cell together. These people, who call each other breadwinners, make a calendar for families to bring food on certain days of the week, so that they all eat fresh food.
Mr. Meta is alone in his cell and the prison authorities choose to adopt a somewhat strict approach, allowing his family to bring him fresh food only once a week. Mr. Meta refuses to eat what is called 'command food', he chooses to eat the food that comes to him once a week, 7 days a week. There is a kilogram limit for food, but the structure does not recognize this restriction, only when they want to strictly respect the regulations.
Mr. Meta complained that he did not spend enough time outdoors. This situation also shows the lack of sunlight for a man who has been in detention for 1.5 years. He only went out once a day and did not spend the required two hours outside, as he claims.
"He lived alone in a cell, also due to a special measures plan that the general directorate of prisons has made for his safety ," Bregu said, among other things.
