The Supreme Court underlines that the judge must feel protected and respected, not only through physical conditions and institutional security, but also in the public climate that is created towards his figure.

Following the shocking murder of Appeals Judge Astrit Kalaja, the judicial body of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Albania has officially reacted, describing the event as an "alarm signal" for the safety and protection of magistrates in the country.

In the official statement, the Supreme Court expresses "deep shock and pain" over the loss of the life of colleague Kalaja and extends its most sincere condolences to the family and the judicial body.

" This serious event is an alarm signal for the security situation in which the judges of the Republic exercise their functions and for the worrying state of the infrastructure in which many of the Albanian courts operate ," the statement emphasizes.

The Supreme Court underlines that the judge must feel protected and respected, not only through physical conditions and institutional security, but also in the public climate that is created towards his figure. " Any form of denigration or contempt towards the judge undermines the authority of justice and the trust of citizens in the rule of law ," it further states.

In conclusion, the Supreme Court demands that guaranteeing the safety of judges be treated as a direct state responsibility, emphasizing that “ the protection of judges is the protection of justice itself and of public trust in the rule of law .”

The judicial body of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Albania expresses its shock and deep sorrow for the tragic event that brought about the loss of life of the judge of the Court of Appeal of General Jurisdiction Astrit Kalaja, and conveys its most sincere condolences to his family, relatives and colleagues.
