The murder of Judge Astrit Kalaja on the premises of the Court of Appeals shocked the justice system and Albanian society.

Invited to "Quo Vadis", the former head of the Court of Appeal, Alaudin Malaj, commented on the serious event.

He said that yesterday Albania lost one of the best judges and people in the justice system.

According to him, the Rama government must urgently reinstate the law on the rearmament of judges and the protection of institutions by the police.

"Something terrible for me happened at the Tirana Court of Appeal, in the center of Tirana. Expressing my condolences to the family of Judge Kalaja, I knew him personally. He was a career judge, he had never failed, this was a flagrant case. Everyone spoke with pity about the judge, I had him by my side, I experienced what kind of person he was. It is a popular expression, the good is easier to shoot than the bad.

We did not lose a judge, but a judge with a brilliant career. As for the event, it was fatal for me. In my time, there were also influences from armed or unarmed people to shoot a judge. But comparing that time to today, there is a big difference. Before, the judges were all armed, but with the arrival of the left-wing government, their weapons were taken away. Even when they give them, they say keep them at home...

Until 2013. The first thing that needs to be urgently restored is to arm them. Restoring security. When I was the leader, it was the police who provided security, not private guards. The incident did not happen by chance. The Court of Appeal is the most important in the Republic of Albania. In these conditions, all of this has been neglected," said Malaj.

He also accused the former head of the Operations, Oltion Bistri, of ambushing justice officials.

"The analysis of the event must be done in complexity, from where it started. Why are these phenomena happening now? Judges are always threatened. We have had Oltion Bistri. The monster of the judiciary. He threatened judges, he went from house to house. All the cases are recorded, he has ambushed people of justice. No one is investigating him. They also gave him money, because he had bought some properties in Tirana's eye, they also returned the money," he said.
