"We will hold each one accountable", head of the GJKKO: No court meets
Erion Bani

The President of the Special Court, Erion Bani, paid homage to Appeals Judge Astrit Kalaja, who was hanged on Monday in the courtroom.

Bani said that all courts in the country need new buildings to ensure security. He stated that security in the country's courts is lacking in 99% of cases.

"You are witnesses yourself, because you are journalists who cover the field of justice and you find that security, in almost 99% of court cases, does not meet the conditions. No court meets the conditions, since all of them must be built from scratch to meet the conditions. We must understand that without security of the courts, there can be no independence of the judge in giving the decision. After all, if a judge is not calm in making the decision, he will not give justice.

But we must also understand that, when talking about the security of the courts, we are not only talking about the security of the judge, you understand that the judge is the one who makes the decision, but the actors are the prosecutor, the lawyer, the defendant, the journalist standing in the courtroom, the other parties... So it is a moment of reflection for everyone that, if there is no security, everyone feels at risk. First of all, all the courts must be built from scratch and as far as I know, there have been requests for new buildings. And those who have the responsibility to provide the buildings and financing, this is a moment of reflection that, the time has come that the courts cannot be left in this situation", said Bani.

The head of the GJKKO added that on Thursday there will be a meeting of all judges of the Republic of Albania, where all problems in the competent bodies will be addressed.

"It will be seen, any body that has not fulfilled its duty, further measures will be taken. First, it will start with the courts and after they fulfill their duty, they will hold accountable one by one all institutions that have not fulfilled their duty. Legal acts since 2010 state that in all courtrooms there must be a presence of police forces, to guarantee security. This is a fact. The reason why these have not been determined will be addressed and discussed," he said.
