Another concern raised is hate speech and public attacks on magistrates, especially by political figures or portals, which undermine their independence and authority.
A group of prosecutors from all over Albania have officially addressed the Prosecutor General, Olsian Çela, and the High Prosecutorial Council, requesting the urgent convening of the General Meeting of Prosecutors to discuss the physical security and protection of the image of magistrates.
This request comes two days after the murder of Judge Astrit Kalaja in the courtroom, an event that has shaken the justice system in the country and raised questions about security measures within judicial institutions. According to prosecutors, this situation constitutes an extraordinary case that requires immediate institutional reflection and response.
"This situation requires immediate institutional reflection and collective decision-making, so that magistrates are no longer exposed to physical or institutional risk in performing their constitutional functions," emphasize the prosecutors and magistrates.
In the letter addressed to Chief Prosecutor Çela, they request that measures be discussed to increase physical security in work environments, improve transportation conditions and institutional support for prosecutors' movements, as well as align security standards with those of the European Union.
"The purpose of this meeting is to discuss and review the current state of security in prosecutorial premises and the guarantees for the protection of the life, integrity and functional independence of magistrates, including: Physical security in prosecutorial premises (entry control, security equipment, presence of judicial police and state police); Conditions of transport and movement of prosecutors, as well as the need for compensation or institutional support for transport and accommodation; Review of security standards in relation to European Union practices and the guidelines of the CEPEJ and the European Commission for the Efficiency of Justice; Taking concrete measures to guarantee minimum conditions of security, confidentiality and dignity in the exercise of their duties," the prosecutors' letter states.
Another concern raised is hate speech and public attacks on magistrates, especially by political figures or portals, which undermine their independence and authority.
"This phenomenon violates the institutional authority and functional independence of the body of magistrates, creating a climate of pressure and uncertainty in the exercise of their duties. It is necessary for the prosecution system, through its representative bodies, to maintain a clear institutional stance towards this phenomenon and to undertake initiatives to strengthen the protection of the image, dignity and security of magistrates," the prosecutors' letter states.
Prosecutors are requesting that the meeting be held within the shortest possible timeframe, to draft concrete proposals that will be presented to state institutions to strengthen the security and protection of magistrates.
