New details have emerged from the scandal in Greece, where a priest serving in the Attica region was caught with cocaine and cannabis hidden inside his church. He was part of a criminal gang, while the "heads" of the group were an Albanian couple, their identities still unclear.
The 46-year-old false priest had been dismissed from the Church of Greece, but continued to present himself sometimes as a priest and sometimes as the "Archbishop of the Old Calendarists."
The accused testified to the police that he hid drugs in the church while claiming that he himself was a drug user.
According to Greek media reports, the gang leader spoke about how she approached the 46-year-old and convinced him to cooperate. The police investigation revealed that she was responsible for recruiting members of the criminal organization and providing full instructions to members regarding the trafficking and illegal transportation of migrants.
A local resident said that the 46-year-old claimed to 'remove witchcraft and cure cancer', leading believers into another trap and thus making money.
"From the beginning, we noticed something was wrong with it. How did they take a space and turn it into a church? They were selling things that monasteries usually sell. I saw that the priest was a former model, then he became a chef and had a YouTube channel. They cooked here, the priests bought potatoes from the local market, he had some people who distributed holiday cards and helped. In the first communication I had with him, he cursed me. Because we told him to turn down the speakers and he got angry. In the afternoons he would say: 'Come, let me remove your spells and cure cancer patients ,'" the citizen recounts.
Meanwhile, during the course of the investigation, conversations between the priest in question and other members of the gang were also discovered.
In their conversations with each other, members of the network "christened" drugs as "candle" and "spray" for cocaine, while they used the words "coffee" and "pasta" for cannabis.
The priest said he was guilty of all charges, however, before the investigator, he is expected to change his position and claim he knows nothing.
Police investigations are continuing to identify other members of the network, as well as any "customers" who purchased drugs from this "special" gang.
