A 23-year-old Albanian man was arrested in Ireland after being caught with a quantity of drugs in his apartment.
To save himself from deportation, a 23-year-old Albanian made a strange request before the court.
When the judge asked Ergis Metajn, 23, why he was seeking asylum in Ireland, he replied that he had a problem with his wife's people in Albania.
"What kind of threat are you under?" , Judge Johnson asked.
"It's about my sexuality. I am bisexual", said Metaj quoted by the local media.
Coroner Leo Mulrooney told the court there was a deportation order for the defendant and it would take effect when any sentence imposed expired.
Irish media reports that the defendant was under the impression that he could stay in Ireland, but a deportation order should be expected in this type of case.
The young Albanian man was caught red-handed with cannabis worth €119,736 delivered in a box to his apartment in Sligo. An Albanian drug gang, the court was told, had posted the package to Sligo by courier, but it was intercepted at Dublin Airport and police decided to put it under surveillance pending controlled delivery, leading to Metaj's arrest on 22 March last year, a year after he arrived in Sligo with his wife seeking asylum.
