Security analyst Ilir Kulla has commented on Prime Minister Edi Rama's recent visit to Israel, describing it as another political show without content, without a concrete product and intended for domestic consumption.
In an interview for the podcast "Të Pashoq", Kulla emphasized that visits to countries like Israel should aim to truly deepen cooperation and not just create media perceptions. "We must distinguish a working visit from an official visit. Israel is a model to be taken as an example. A speech in the Knesset is not enough to say that we have made history," he said.
According to him, although it is the first time that an Albanian prime minister has spoken in the Israeli parliament, this has not produced any concrete benefits for Albania. "What did this visit bring besides speeches? Nothing. Relations with Israel have remained at a show level. No agreements, no announced investments, no significant steps like Kosovo did with the relocation of the embassy to Jerusalem," he added.
Ilir Kulla: We need to distinguish between a working visit and an official visit. I would really like us to increase the level of visits and cooperation with Israel.
Israel is a model to be taken as an example. Why? And it should be added not only with show, but with real, concrete things, such as for example in recent years we have had, direct flights, the arrival of tourists and so on and so forth. But we are still very far from what it should be with Israel. And the idea that we are using, a working visit to Israel in the report to show the internal politics, or the things that we have here inside, are things that do not coincide very well with each other, especially in time. Why?
What did this visit to Israel specifically produce? What is the product? Besides the show. Mori, the first time that an Albanian prime minister speaks in the Knesset, in parliament, yes it is true. It is the first time and this is the good news. But what did it produce specifically? We have had it, President Topi paid a state visit. Prime Minister Nano in '97, '90, '97 or '97, '98 is not, he paid a visit, he even went to the West Bank, in the West Bank he met Arafat, and in, Netanyahu was prime minister, and in Jerusalem. I said, President Meta was in 2020, he even honored with decorations those who came and assisted a year ago for this, for the earthquake. Rama himself was there before. But the point is that relations with Israel have remained only at the show level. We are not yet in anything concrete. Now they are telling us there will be no investments in the military sector and so on and so forth. I hope there will be investments in the military sector, because I know the capacities and the quality and so on. But I repeat, we are in the 14th year of socialist government. And in the 14th year of socialist government, in relation to the Israelis, who are not to be underestimated and are not to be counted on, because every time you go you will tell them the same story that they are not stupid, we have nothing concrete.
- So this visit may have been made for the personal benefit of Prime Minister Rama's political momentum, because we know that Benjamin Netanyahu has a very close relationship with the American president.
Ilir Kulla: Benjamin Netanyahu has close relations with the American president, but for the interests of Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel and the American president. Albania, that's why I told you that specifically, I expected during this visit, or rather if someone had asked me, I expected during this visit that he would say that yes, we will move the embassy from Tel Aviv, that we have a small apartment in Tel Aviv so that we can understand each other, it is called the embassy. In one of those buildings in the center of Tel Aviv and I believe that the prime minister has never been there, I don't know where it is. I know where it is. And where the diplomats have apartments. In Jerusalem. Like Kosovo did. This would be a step. This would be an effect. I didn't see it, I didn't hear it. But still I have to say that this is what we know and what they tell us. Is there anything more?
