Former prosecutor Ervin Karanxha, who was one of the main investigators of the January 21, 2011 event, has revealed new details about the investigation into the murder of four protesters in front of the Prime Minister's Office building.
He stated that the main investigation is focused on the murders, calling the incident "the most serious criminal offense, a crime against life."
According to him, the political rhetoric of that time flared up after the issuance of six detention orders by the Tirana Prosecutor's Office, which led to institutional clashes.
Karanxha emphasized that despite the work done, problems in the investigation were later noticed by the Supreme Court and the Strasbourg Court.
The former prosecutor criticized the interventions of former Chief Prosecutor Ina Rama, adding that he did not agree with the reorganization of the investigative group.
" I was the prosecutor of the January 21 case, which dealt with the murders, because this is the biggest crime that has occurred, the crime against life. I was notified by the head of the prosecution to participate in the first investigative actions. We were an investigative group. I examined the scene. The northern side of the prime minister's office was examined and specifically if we consider the metal fence, in the inner part, there with the other prosecutors who conducted the examination, we found a series of shell casings fired from firearms.
We have conducted the investigation. We have found about 117 cartridges fired from five firearms, corresponding to the “Fire Group”. The political rhetoric that arose was with the issuance of six arrest warrants by the Albanian prosecution. Investigations have been conducted. This is a serious event, four citizens have lost their lives. The problems with this issue have been established by the Supreme Court and the Strasbourg Court.
The Strasbourg Court finds that senior officials were not investigated. We have done our duty. By order of the former Attorney General Ina Rama, I dealt with the protesters. I reformed the investigative group, added another one due to the organization. I did not agree with this, because I was the prosecutor of the scene. Does it seem normal that I asked Basha after 15 years? This is a scandal ," he told "Real Story".
