The Albanian government has agreed with Italy on the construction of the water pipeline that will connect Gjirokastra with Galugnano, in Salento. This has been confirmed by the President of this region, Michele Emiliano, but strongly opposed by environmentalists and Albanian experts.
Today, they held a meeting, listing the 'disadvantages' that would come to Albania and local resources, if this project were to be put 'into life'. The environmentalist, Sazan Guri, said that the realization of this project also contradicts some national conventions.
According to the Italians, it will take 4 years to build the water supply infrastructure and its cost would reach the value of 1 billion euros.
The project is expected to be financed with the resources of the EIB, the EBRD, the Italian state and the region of the Apulian water corporation.
According to the media, the goal is to transport 150 million cubic meters of water to Puglia every year.
It will be a strategic infrastructure for the region, given the drought that has characterized it in recent years.
