As was the case during America's founding, the effort in Albania to implement those principles to build a just society with separation of powers and an independent judiciary after the fall of communism was met with resistance.
This is the opinion of the American lawyer Roger Sherrard, who with his book "Live to make people free", takes readers inside the dangerous and fragile transition of Albania from an atheist state in the Stalinist style to a democracy of fragile.
During half a century under communist rule, the Albanian dictatorship portrayed the United States of America as the country's main enemy, warning citizens of an imminent invasion.
At that time, the entry of Americans into the Balkan state was prohibited. But after the fall of the Iron Curtain, Albanian leaders invited Americans to help in their efforts to create "a new identity and a new national purpose."
A part of the book is dedicated to the former president of the Supreme Court, Zef Brozi, who was dismissed from office after releasing from prison 6 minorities of the Omonia organization.
*'IF YOU HAVE A RESCUE PLAN, IMPLEMENT IT NOW'*
Later that Saturday, now supported by the testimony of American officials and journalists, Zefi surrendered his diplomatic passport.
The apartment of the Brozi family remained under the surveillance of the secret police. But, deprived of his passport, Zefi was no longer seen as a flight risk. Meanwhile, I received a text from a White House official warning me that house arrest wasn't Zephy's only problem.
“I'll deny saying this, but we have evidence that your friend is going to die in a car accident,” the official informed me. "If you have a rescue plan, implement it now."
What Berisha did not know was that Zefi had applied for a personal passport the day after he left office. The rescue plan we had drawn up with the American Embassy was this: Zef would call the embassy and say: "I'm Zef Brozi, I want to talk to Carlo." Carlo was Carl Siebentritt, the political officer at the embassy. Before the call was forwarded to Siebentritt, a car would leave for Zeff's apartment, bringing an embassy representative, his passport and plane tickets.
In the early hours of Sunday morning, November 12, 1995, Zefi and Diana evaded the subdued surveillance of "Berisha's gang" and got into a car. Accompanied by an embassy official, they were on their way to Rinas International Airport, which was then just a small building next to a worn-out runway surrounded by cattle fields, just outside the capital.
Zefi and Diana took a deep breath as they settled into their seats and the door of a Soviet Tupolev plane bound for Budapest closed behind them. This flight would connect them to another to New York.
After receiving clearance to take off, the Malev Hungarian Airlines plane moved onto the destroyed runway. Suddenly, the loud roar of the engines began to fade and the plane came to a stop. /Top Channel/
