The Supreme Court has rejected the appeal filed by the dismissed Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, who requested the change of the security measure "prison arrest", which was imposed on him on February 10 at the request of SPAK.
Through his legal defense, Veliaj requested a relaxation of the security measure, claiming that there is no possibility of destroying the evidence, since SPAK has closed the investigations and submitted the file to the court.
On the other hand, SPAK claims that he should be kept in prison, as the witnesses have not yet all confessed before the black squads.
Veliaj was arrested by SPAK order in February 2025 and has been in a detention cell in Durrës since then. The mayor, now dismissed by decision of Prime Minister Edi Rama, has appealed to the courts several times to obtain his freedom, but none of the courts has approved his requests.
Veliaj has also filed a petition with the Constitutional Court opposing his dismissal from office as Mayor of Tirana.
