In the conditions where the 'Rama' government has not taken any measures to ease the burden of the increase in oil prices for citizens, the latter have in many cases been forced to massively flood into North Macedonia to buy fuel at a cheaper price.
This consequence of the Albanian government's failure is being used as a political credo and success story by the Macedonian Prime Minister, Hristijan Mickoski, who has declared that oil consumption has reached a record of over 2 million liters per day. He argues that this increase has come about due to purchases by citizens of neighboring countries, because Macedonia has the lowest price in the region.
"The reason for this is that some citizens from neighboring countries come to Macedonia to refuel, especially in the border areas. The greatest pressure is on the northern, southern and western borders, as the prices of oil and gasoline in the country are lower compared to some of the neighboring countries," Mickoski said.
According to data from the government of North Macedonia, daily oil consumption has increased by over 40 percent compared to the pre-crisis period, precisely due to massive purchases by Albanians and Greeks, two countries that have much higher oil prices than North Macedonia.
"The price of 95-octane gasoline in the country varies between 1.27 and 1.31 euros per liter, while in Greece and Albania this price is over two euros, " Mickoski added.
Estimates from the North Macedonian statistical office show that Albanians and Greeks are buying an average of 200-300 thousand liters of fuel per day in North Macedonia. Asked if the government will intervene to limit this phenomenon, Mickoski said there is no reason.
"The oil supply situation is more than stable and there is no signal of possible shortages, " Mickovski said.
