Parliament voted today with 75 votes in favor of removing the immunity of former Prime Minister Sali Berisha, following the SPAK request for his arrest.
As the vote was accompanied by tensions inside and outside the Assembly hall, the news attracted the attention of foreign media.
The Washington Post writes that opposition MPs clashed with security guards, as Berisha refused to speak in parliament.
"The ruling Socialist Party holds 74 of the 140 seats in Albania's national legislature, and 75 lawmakers agreed to comply with a request by prosecutors to strip Berisha of his parliamentary immunity. Thursday's vote paves the way for prosecutors to seek court permission to put Berisha under arrest in prison or house arrest ," writes the Washington Post.
Meanwhile, the Associated Press writes that with the lack of opposition in Parliament, there was no vote against removing Berisha's immunity.
The news was also reported by the Greek media, which noted the tensions and disturbances caused in the Assembly.
"This decision was accompanied by strong protests by the opposition MPs who overturned the mandates and lit smokestacks. Berisha himself called the decision a criminal and serious violation of the Constitution and called on his followers to continue demonstrations of disobedience to the state, until the overthrow of the Rama regime, as he calls the government of the socialists", writes Protothema .
In the meantime, newsbeast.gr writes that Berisha now faces two options: to be assigned a detention measure or to be placed under house arrest.
Among other things, the Greek media also point out the fact that Berisha has been declared "non-grata" by the USA.
"As a corruption suspect, Berisha has been classified as undesirable both in the USA and Great Britain", write the Greek media.
