"La Repubblica": Italian carabinieri queue to go to Albania to observe
Italian policemen in Gjadër

Italian policemen are waiting in line to be part of the group of law enforcement bodies that will work in the camp for asylum seekers in Albania.

This is what the Italian daily "La Repubblica" writes.

According to the Italian newspaper, because the peak of the "season" of illegal refugee cruises in the Mediterranean has passed, of the 13 million euros allocated for the maintenance of the camp for the first three months, only 1.5 million have been spent.

The Italian newspaper reports that there is no longer any exact date when the camp will open. Initially, the works were postponed due to the hot summer sun in our country, then the rains and the lack of sewage in Gjadër hindered the work.

But despite the fact that there is no date for the opening of the camp and the asylum processing center, "La Repubblica" writes that policemen, carabinieri, and other officers of Italian agencies are waiting in line to get a job in Albania. So far it is reported that there are thousands of requests to make at least one tour.

For their services, they will earn 100 euros per day net, as well as free accommodation and food. At the moment the structure is empty, but even if one of the asylum seekers ends up in the small prison built just in case, the ratio is 3 guards to 1 prisoner. For comparison, in Italian prisons the ratio is the opposite, 1 guard for 3 prisoners.

There is still no date from Italy for the opening of the centers.

The Ministry of the Interior no longer gives dates. Tired of answering "a matter of a few weeks", September has already ended and the project for Albania has not started yet. Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi still hopes to present to his G7 colleagues convened on October 2 the strategies to combat migrant trafficking.

But the excessive sun and heat that forced workers to work long breaks in the central hours of the day and now the rain that made Gjader without sewerage. And for this reason, there is still no certainty when the Civil Engineers will give the OK and the centers will be handed over to the Ministry of the Interior. The last date in circulation, 23 September, has been denied and none of the many actors involved in the project, from UNHCR to judges to police forces, have received any definite communication and in any case an opening from the second half of October is excluded.
