One day before the plenary session where the ratification of the agreement between Albania and Italy on refugees is planned, a citizen and civil society activist in Lezhë sent a petition to the Assembly.
This petition has been signed by 700 citizens, who ask the legislators not to vote on the agreement. They say that the establishment of refugee camps will have consequences for social, economic life and public safety in Lezha.
According to them, the refugees will harm public security in the city. This request addressed to the Assembly was joined by the Chairman of the Democratic Party in Lezhë Alfrida Marku and the former socialist Prefect Gjok Jaku.
The agreement between Albania and Italy turns Lezha into a reception center for refugees from third countries, who will enter through the port of Shengjin and be accommodated at the Gjadri aerodrome.
The agreement for immigrants has been approved by the Italian Parliament with the majority of votes, while the Albanian Parliament will vote in the session of December 14. The Socialists decided to move the ratification of the agreement in parliament from December 22, when it was originally scheduled to be voted on, to this Thursday. The decision was taken at the meeting of the SP group, where the chief socialist Edi Rama was also present. The latter demanded that all SP MPs be present at the session. Only with the vote of the socialists, the agreement with Italy was also approved in parliamentary committees.
The agreement with Italy with the immigrants, which is expected to receive the green light from the parliament on Thursday, was sent to the Constitutional Court last week by 2 opposition parties, the official PD and another of 30 deputies of Bardhi and Berisha with the claim that it violates the Constitution and that it is done in the absence of transparency.
