The case against former minister Mediu has been reopened after Zamira Durdaj, who lost her son in the Gërdec incident, reported him to SPAK.
Mediu was one of those accused of abuse of office for the 2008 event where Albania was shocked by the explosion of a military weapons depot in Gërdec, near Tirana.
Previously, the Special Court of First Instance for Corruption and Organized Crime decided to accept the family members of the victims of Gërdec as parties in the process against former minister Fatmir Mediu. 26 people lost their lives and 300 others were injured in the explosion of a military base on March 15, 2008.
SPAK has sent for trial the former Minister of Defense, Fatmir Mediu, who is accused of in connection with the process of demilitarization and dismantling of ammunition that took place in the premises of the former "Tank Brigade", in the village of Gërdec, in collaboration with other officials of the Ministry of Defense, as well as persons who have had the quality of military personnel in command, issued several by-laws in violation of the law.
According to SPAK, Mediu has harmed the interests of the state and has favored 2 companies, 'SAC' and 'Albademil'. For this matter, he is accused of "abuse of duty" referring to the Criminal Code and "abuse of duty" in cooperation with a military subject-command cadre.
