The Greek media have again paid attention to the case of Fredi Beleri, for whom SPAK announced today that it has completed the investigations by sending the file for trial.
Greek media Kathimerini writes that "the decision of the Albanian government to extend the detention period of the mayor of Himara, Fredi Beleri, is a matter of high priority and a turning point in Greek-Albanian relations".
Kathimerini writes that while in North Macedonia the reforms are approved and implemented, as a result of which they "unblock" the steps on the way to the country's membership in the European Union, in Tirana the Beleri case acts as a very serious obstacle.
"The decision of Rama's government, which decided to imprison Beler before the local elections, obviously cannot continue either at the same pace or with the same intensity, until this "thorn in bilateral relations" is removed. In Tirana, the Beleri case acts as a very serious obstacle between the two neighboring countries," the Greek newspaper said.
This is, more or less, the message that Athens has sent in different ways and from all possible levels to the Albanian leadership and also to Greece's European partners.
The next step is the letter that Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis will send to his EU counterparts, to whom he will explain why the detention of Fredi Beller is a flagrant violation of any concept of the rule of law, a condition of necessary for him.
"Albania must respect the elementary rules of the rule of law and it is an issue in which our country will continue to act as an absolute priority because we must also protect the rights of the minority, as well as a legally elected mayor". said the Greek government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis yesterday.
We remind you that, today, the Prosecutor's Office of Poçame closed the investigations for Fredi Beleri and Pandeli Kokaveshi, who were caught red-handed for buying votes. SPAK accuses Beler and Kokavesh of "Active corruption in elections".
Fredi Beleri was arrested by order of the Vlora Prosecutor's Office two days before the May 14 elections.
Convicted twice, suspected of the massacre of Peshpia, with dubious education and filed for anti-Albanian activity, Beleri, whose name was changed to Dionisios Fredis Beleris, was caught red-handed buying votes.
On May 13, the Court of Vlora decided to leave Beleri in prison and transferred the case to SPAK, the Special Prosecutor's Office against Corruption and Organized Crime.
While on May 15, Fredi Beleri, who competed under the slogan of the "Bashke Fitomje" coalition of the duo Meta-Berisha, was declared the winner of the elections for the Municipality of Himara despite being behind bars.
Beler's arrest has caused a strong reaction from Greece, which threatened Albania that such decisions will have an impact on EU membership.
