There is no freedom for Ilir Beqaj. The Special Court has left the former minister and at the same time the former head of the State Agency for Strategic Programming and Aid Coordination (SASPAC) in prison. He is accused of embezzling EU funds when he was in charge of SASPAC. His accomplice, Ermal Kurtulaj, was also left in the cell.
Ilir Beqaj was arrested after an action by SPAK, as he appeared before the court today to familiarize himself with the security measure. Beqaj himself denied the charges and asked for a more lenient measure in exchange for a financial guarantee. He offered 5 million new ALL as a guarantee, but it seems that the stolen millions could not save him.
Prison arrest has been decided for Ilir Beqaj, former minister and former director of SASPAC, his associate Ermal Kurtulaj, coordinator of the EUSAIR project. For Alfred Nikolla, the Administrative Director of "Landways International" has changed measures from arrest to prison; under house arrest. Meanwhile, house arrest has been set for Elton Marini, partner of the private company and Gazmend Haxhian, the owner of 'Landways International', but the security measure has not been executed for him, as he is abroad. Bledar Leka and Bjona Zijaj, financial consultants, are also required to appear.
After this decision, it is expected that Beqaj will now be transferred to one of the prisons where many of his socialist colleagues are, who have also eaten plums behind Rama's back. In Durrës and Fier, there are many of his colleagues, some of whom will probably be "cellmates".
SPAK says that it has found evidence that Ilir Beqaj as head of SASPAC, in collaboration with Kurtulaj, whom he himself appointed, ordered fictitious procurement procedures, worth hundreds of thousands of euros, to various companies for incomplete services and the final beneficiary was precisely the former minister himself through the Gzona Restaurant in Tirana, which SPAK says is owned by him.
Meanwhile, details from the session have been revealed. SPAK claims that Beqaj hid the ownership of a vehicle, which was used by Kurtulaj, but which actually belonged to the former minister.
Beqaj said that he had no reason to hide such a vehicle, since he can justify it with the income he has. He added that he has neither a license nor a vehicle, so he always drives as a passenger.
" I always ride as a passenger because I don't have a license. I can use such a car without a problem with the income I have, I can afford not the expenses of this car, but some such with the income I have, I have no reason to hide it ", he said.
Regarding the inclusion of the woman as a co-owner in the Gzona restaurant, Beqaj said that he was asked by a businessman friend to attract high-end customers.
" When my wife joined "Gzona", it was lucky that a mutual friend was interested in cooperating in business. This is due to the fact that it was seen as an opportunity to offer, due to familiarity with high-end clients ", said Beqaj.
Even Ermal Kurtulaj asked for a milder security measure, leaving a property guarantee for the Audi Q7 type vehicle that he had just sold.
