Rubio, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, as well as Trump's national security adviser Michael Waltz, a former U.S. special forces soldier who fought in Afghanistan, are among those expected to make a final decision, the sources said.
After suspending procedures related to the relocation of Afghans to the US, the Trump administration is considering the possibility of closing the office at the State Department that was responsible for the relocation of thousands of Afghans to America.
Scattered across several countries, including Albania, it is now unknown what will happen to their fate if the decision to close the supervisory office is made at the end of March.
The plan is confirmed by at least four sources, including a US official and a lawyer, as well as two other people with knowledge of the directive. And if the office closure is approved, it would ultimately block the transfer of about 200,000 Afghans to the US.
Asked a few days ago, Prime Minister Edi Rama said that anyone who wants to stay in Albania will be free to do so.
"There will be no problem with Afghan refugees living in Albania. If they want to stay in our country, they can do so, they cannot return to their country and stop the violence. These are not big numbers for us, they are only a few hundred people," he said.
Family members of Afghan-American U.S. military personnel, children allowed to reunite with their parents, relatives of Afghans already admitted and tens of thousands of Afghans who have worked for the U.S. government during the 20-year war are among those who could be penalized if the office is closed, the lawyer and U.S. official said.
"Closing this office would be a national disgrace, a betrayal of our Afghan allies, of the veterans who fought for them, and of America's word," said Shawn VanDiver, founder of #AfghanEvac, the leading coalition of veterans and advocacy groups and others coordinating relocations with the U.S. government.
The White House and the US State Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment, Reuters writes.
The development comes as the administration asks embassies around the world to prepare for staff cuts under a directive from US President Donald Trump to reform the diplomatic corps, and DOGE, the office run by billionaire Elon Musk, is making efforts to cut $2 trillion in spending.
