The Head of the Special Prosecution Office, Klodjan Braho, participated in an international conference in Palermo, the symbolic city of the fight against the mafia, where two of the most well-known figures of Italian justice, Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, were commemorated.
The meeting took place on 22-23 May at the Palace of Justice in Palermo, with the participation of leaders and representatives of prosecution offices and justice institutions from Europe, the Western Balkans and Latin America. The main topic of the conference was international cooperation against transnational criminal organizations and the new challenges posed by global organized crime.
In his speech, Braho underlined the approach of the Special Prosecution Office in the face of the challenges posed today by transnational organized crime, which increasingly operates through cross-border networks, capable of adapting to technological, financial and logistical developments.
He stressed the importance of an investigative approach that aims to understand the entire chain of criminal activity: from the source and organization of criminal activity, to international connections, financial mechanisms, laundering of the proceeds of crime and the final destinations of illicit profits.
Particular attention was paid to the way in which the phenomenon of organized crime is publicly addressed, emphasizing the need to avoid generalizations based on nationality, language or social affiliation. It was underlined that the fight against organized crime should focus on individuals, structures and concrete criminal networks, based on evidence, professional analysis and cooperation between law enforcement authorities.
" SPAK assesses that confronting transnational organized crime requires proactive and financial investigations, rapid exchange of information and sustained cooperation with international counterpart authorities. In this regard, the Special Prosecution Office remains a serious, reliable and active partner for international cooperation in the fight against organized crime and corruption ," said Braho.
The conference took place on a symbolic date for Italy, in memory of Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, two prosecutors considered heroes of the fight against the Italian mafia.
Falcone and Borsellino led the largest investigations against the mafia organization Cosa Nostra in the 1980s and 1990s, leading the so-called "Maxi Process", in which hundreds of mafiosi were convicted by Italian justice. They changed the way the mafia was investigated, following the flow of money, political connections and financial structures of organized crime.
But their struggle had a tragic end. On May 23, 1992, Giovanni Falcone was killed in the Capaci assassination, near Palermo, when the mafia blew up the highway where his vehicle was passing. His wife and three bodyguards also died with him. Just 57 days later, on July 19, 1992, the mafia also killed Paolo Borsellino with a car bomb on Via D'Amelio in Palermo, causing great shock in Italy and around the world.
Their murder became a turning point for the Italian state and the global war against the mafia, while Falcone and Borsellino remain today a symbol of justice, courage and sacrifice in the face of organized crime. / Pamphlet
