The murder of Judge Astrit Kalaja inside the Tirana Court of Appeals appears to have been a premeditated murder.
The Shëmbi family has been in a legal process for years, as the cause of the conflict is the building of the former Reserve School in the "Skanderbeg" neighborhood.
This building has housed 31 families since 1992. But in 2012, Gjon Shkëmbi made claims to the property, arguing that it is property inherited from generation to generation.
The 31 families were sheltered in this building 33 years ago by the Municipality of Shkodra. However, residents say that Gjon Shkambi, who claims ownership of the building, has false documents. Meanwhile, the Shkambi family is demanding that the 31 families be evicted.
The matter became complicated in 2012, when the Municipality of Shkodra signed the sale of the building to Gjon Shkëmbi. According to residents, the mayor of Shkodra at the time, Lorenc Luka, gave Gjon Shkëmbi a privatization document without a decision of the municipal council. In 2020, 31 families clashed with the private bailiff's office for the first time. Since then, the matter has dragged on at the doors of institutions and justice.
This event caused a stir because some time ago they reconciled on the show "See you in Court" on "Tv Klan".
Footage from the show has emerged on social media, clearly showing the tension between the two parties. The video shows Gjon Shkëmbi threatening the other party, who claimed they had occupied his property, saying he would "blow them up".
Meanwhile, in 2020, the author's father, Gjon Shkëmbi, also addressed the "Stop" show on TV Klan, regarding the incident. According to the reporting made at the time, the Shkëmbi family denounced that they have a building plus land in Shkodër, which they have usurped. He went to court, where he won in the first instance, while the Appeals Court returned him for a retrial, as the file was missing two minutes and the expert report.
Judge Astrit Kalaja was killed yesterday in the courtroom of the Court of Appeal with 3 bullets in the chest. In yesterday's trial, the Appeal of the General Jurisdiction ruled against the author and his family.
The perpetrator, 30-year-old Elvis Shkëmbi, opened fire after the verdict was announced in favor of the opposing party. The shooting killed Judge Kalaja and injured two other people, Ragip and Ervis Kurtaj, a father and son.
After the incident, Elvis Shkambi left the courtroom and handed over his weapon to the security guard, who was assigned to supervise and oversee the proceedings in another courtroom. Elvis Shkambi then stood outside the courtroom with his hands in his pockets, chatting with the court's doorman and then inviting the police to arrest him.
Over 10 police officers, including those from the Traffic Police, the Security Forces and the Eagles, handcuff the executioner Elvis Shkambi and his uncle Gjon Shkambi.
