Massacre at the Appeal Court, First Instance Judiciary Body Reacts: Measures

The judicial body of the First Instance Court of General Jurisdiction in Tirana has reacted to the serious event that shocked public opinion yesterday, where Judge Astrit Kalaja was killed in the Appeal Court.

The First Instance Court of General Jurisdiction of Tirana requests the immediate adoption of concrete institutional measures to guarantee the safety of judges and their families, at all levels of the judicial system.

"The Judicial Corps at the Court of First Instance of General Jurisdiction of Tirana, feels shocked by the loss of life of an honorable colleague, in the line of duty, after a gunshot attack while wearing the Judge's uniform.
He exercised his noble function of Judge of the Republic for three decades, with great professionalism and dignity.
With deep sorrow, we express our most sincere condolences to the family of the judge who interrupted his journey, while working and contributing without fear and without any kind of protection for the rule of law.

We stand in solidarity with the entire judiciary in the Republic of Albania, on this day of mourning, not only for the justice system, but for Albanian society itself. The Court of First Instance of General Jurisdiction of Tirana demands the immediate adoption of concrete institutional measures to guarantee the safety of judges and their families, at all levels of the judicial system.

The Court of First Instance of General Jurisdiction of Tirana calls for public accountability of all institutional, political and media actors, to stop inciting hate speech against the judiciary.
Without respect and real protection of judges, there can be no independent justice, the rule of law and citizens' trust in justice. In honor of our late colleague, the Court of First Instance of General Jurisdiction of Tirana will continue to strongly demand the respect, protection and dignity of every judge, who serves justice and society with integrity.
Also, the Court of First Instance of General Jurisdiction of Tirana assures the entire public that hostile communication and physical attacks will not be able to intimidate the judges in the Republic of Albania, who will continue to work with dedication to serve the public, offering justice, for which the judge, father, family man and good man, our unforgettable colleague Astrit Kalaja, gave his life in office. "The judicial corps at the Court of First Instance of General Jurisdiction of Tirana," the announcement states.
