Endri Shabani has spoken for the first time since his election as Ombudsman. In an exclusive interview for “Inside Albania” with Alice Taylor on Euronews, he explained the controversial moments of his election as Ombudsman, including the kiss he gave to the MPs during the ceremony as well as the clash with Adriatik Lapaj.
Although the majority supported his candidacy in the end, Shabani emphasizes that without the signatures of opposition MPs he would never have been a candidate. This moment, according to him, reflects the institutional independence and professionalism required to exercise this duty.
" Without the support of opposition MPs, I would never have been a candidate. This is an institution and I want to depersonalize it. It doesn't matter if I like a person or not, we have to serve everyone equally ," he says.
One of the most commented moments was the symbolic kiss that Shabani gave to the deputies during his election ceremony, an action that was accompanied by debates in the media and social networks.
" I was very stressed. It was a moment that no one deserved. It was supposed to be a ceremony and I was prepared to give a speech, but chaos ensued. There was smoke, they were hitting me with bottles and water and other things. So I was trying to calm everyone down and the kiss was an instinctive way to do that ," Shabani explained, emphasizing that the action was instinctive and not planned.
Regarding his clash with Adriatik Lapaj, Shabani explained that the differences arose from different visions of political engagement and personal career paths.
" We had collaborated as activists and had a common history, but after some differences in vision, we parted ways. I chose to step away from political activity and focus on my duty as Ombudsman ," Shabani said.
He emphasized that independence and professionalism are the main principles of his work, seeing the institution as a mechanism to serve all citizens equally, without political differences: " This is an institution and I want to depersonalize it. It doesn't matter whether I like a person or not, we have to serve everyone equally ."
