An Italian surgeon in Tirana is being investigated by Italian authorities after a 54-year-old patient, operated on for gastric stenosis at a private clinic in Tirana, lost his life four days after the surgical intervention.

The patient, Italian entrepreneur Massimo Ferro, suffered from type II diabetes and had decided to undergo bariatric surgery after failing weight loss diets. The surgery was performed on December 18, 2025 at the private clinic "Trita Hospital" in Tirana, after a previous consultation in Milan with surgeon Andrea Formiga, who suggested performing the surgery in Albania for a lower cost.

According to the family, the preoperative tests and checks were not performed in Italy and were postponed until the day before the intervention in Tirana. They claim that the clinic did not respect the medical protocols foreseen for patients with obesity and diabetes, including the lack of treatment for the concomitant disease and preparation before the operation.

The day after the intervention, the patient communicated with his family, saying that his condition was good. However, according to the complaint, he began to show severe fatigue and high blood sugar levels. On December 20, a high fever appeared, while on December 21, the condition worsened with difficulty breathing. He was taken to the emergency room of the public hospital "Mother Teresa", where he underwent several tests and was treated, before returning to the private clinic.

On the morning of December 22, four days after the surgery, the patient suffered a cardiac arrest at Trita Hospital and was urgently transferred to the QSUT. Initially, his condition was reported to be stable, but in the evening, his family was informed that he had passed away.

The family states that so far they have not been given a clear explanation for the cause of death and has requested a full clarification of the circumstances. Italian authorities have launched an investigation into surgeon Andrea Formiga and dietitian Alessandra Freda, who, according to the complaint, had directed patients towards surgical interventions. Formiga turns out to be professionally connected to other private health structures linked to the clinic where the operation was performed.

While the investigation in Italy has begun, it remains unclear whether proceedings have also been opened by Albanian authorities in the case, in an issue that has raised questions about medical standards and the control of private clinics.
