Money from drugs and corruption is being cleaned using cryptocurrencies,

Money earned from drugs, corruption, crime or illegal activities is being laundered through cryptocurrencies, and this phenomenon is spreading rapidly, especially in countries with fragile institutions.

This is the warning of Chainalysis in the report for the year 2023 in which it shows that during 2022 alone, almost 24 billion dollars were cleaned through virtual currencies.
"If I pretend that I have invested 1,000 euros even after three months, I say that the investment increased, but this actually did not happen. That's how I manage to clean the money. This becomes simpler in the absence of regulators", says IT expert, Shahin Dokuzi.

According to the report, currency exchange points are also part of money laundering schemes, which are often used mainly by criminal groups.

"You have to clean. in this case it is the criminal groups that can clean up the most. In fact, today, through the phone, everyone can", emphasizes Dokuzi.

In the latest report, Moneyval, a mechanism of the European Commission that assesses the risk of money laundering, assessed that Albania is at risk from the phenomenon of money laundering through cryptocurrencies.

"Albania is at risk since everything is done by phone. It starts the cryptocurrency and is not controlled by anyone", continues the expert.

Only during an operation last month at a currency exchange point in Tirana, the police seized 60,665 euros benefited from money laundering through cryptocurrencies. Two cryptocurrency accounts were also seized, worth 135,000 euros./A2
