Numerous police forces surrounded the building of News24 and other media outlets that are part of this media group on Saturday morning, preventing journalists from entering the work premises.
Without a court decision and beyond any logic, several dozen people in uniform surrounded the building just before 07:00, while Ardi Veliu, the director of KAYO, a state-owned company created by Government decision, whose object of work is the production and trade of weapons and military materials, was also present with the Police. It seems that in this case too, the Rama Government has chosen to use the police, creating a case that has no connection with any democratic country, when a media group is surrounded by police forces.
Journalist Klodiana Lala, in a reaction on social media, emphasizes that "The police surrounded the News24 building this morning, forcibly and without any warning, interrupting the broadcast signal, in an unprecedented act against free media."
Lala emphasizes that employees have been prevented from entering their workplaces, while citizens have been deprived of the largest and most reliable information channel in the country.
"This is a direct attack on the constitutional right to information and on freedom of the press, which constitutes the foundation of any democracy. Today's event marks a dangerous precedent for silencing critical voices and establishing control over public information," Lala emphasizes.
Meanwhile, journalist Osman Stafa, in another reaction, emphasizes that the State Police, with a clearly political order, has surrounded the most watched news channel in Albania. "Employees are not allowed to enter the editorial office, News24 is not allowed to enter the live broadcast," writes Stafa.
The media group has issued an urgent call to political parties, civil society, media organizations and foreign embassies in Tirana to react immediately and stop this violent act, guaranteeing the immediate restoration of broadcasting and full respect for free speech.
"Every minute of silence imposed on the media is an open wound to democracy," one reaction reads.
