Thousands of Albanian students gathered today in Skopje in a massive protest to protect the Albanian language and the right to conduct the state bar exam in the mother tongue.
With red and black flags, banners and chants, protesters marched towards the Ministry of Justice, demanding respect for the constitutional rights of Albanians in North Macedonia.
During the protest, organizer Mevlan Ademi stated that the demonstration was taking place peacefully, while accusing the authorities of provocations and obstructing Albanian students traveling to Skopje.
"Last time they complained about the Albanian flag, please raise the Albanian flag as high as possible today. We come to protest peacefully," he said to the protesters.
According to Ademi, Albanian students from Tirana have been detained and diverted towards Kumanovo, while the protest is being held in the capital.
" Albanian students from Tirana are being forcibly sent to Kumanovo, while the protest is being held in Skopje. We are going out to protest peacefully, but we are being provoked along the way ," he declared.
Amid patriotic chants and national songs, the organizer also addressed the police forces with the call: " Police, you must protect us too ."
The protest was accompanied by numerous calls in support of the Albanian language and Albanian national identity.
" Together Albanians, sons of the eagle, in an undivided cause, we are eternally proud ," Ademi was heard saying to the crowd.
The students are demanding that the bar exam be held in Albanian, arguing that this right is guaranteed by the Constitution and the Law on the Use of Languages in North Macedonia.
Today's protest is considered one of the largest Albanian student mobilizations in recent years in the country and has also received support from Albanian students and citizens from Kosovo and other Albanian regions.
