Mussel farmers in Lake Butrint protested in front of the Saranda municipality, expressing dissatisfaction with the degradation of the lake and delays in issuing lease contracts for the use of the facilities. One of the protesters, in a sign of revolt, poured a bucket of mussels during a municipal council meeting.
According to the protesters, the blocking of the gates of the Bistrica hydroelectric power plant, which supplies the lake with fresh water, is reducing the level of oxygen in the water, negatively affecting the quality and production of mussels. Soraldo Nebo, one of the farmers, stated that independent analyses have shown a lack of dissolved oxygen in the water, warning of even more serious consequences during the summer.
" We risked losing the seed this year. The vital parameters of the lake are declining and if the situation continues like this, we will have serious consequences for production ," said Nebo.
