Former Minister of Finance, Arben Malaj, has criticized Prime Minister Edi Rama for the way he is exercising leadership on the eve of a fourth term, emphasizing the lack of self-criticism and the unnecessary clash with the justice system.

Invited to an "Off the Record" show on A2 CNN, Malaj stopped at Rama's marathon press conference at the end of the year, saying that what surprised him most was the fact that the prime minister "has never said the word 'sorry'". According to him, Rama has never publicly admitted that something was not done well, but for every problem he has found an excuse.

Malaj stressed that the prime minister should not open public debates with the judiciary, as the latter acts on the basis of a legal framework that has been approved by Parliament.

" If there are real concerns, such as the one about the presumption of innocence and the high number of people in detention, these are resolved with legal changes, not with daily clashes with justice ," he said.

According to the former minister, in a functional democracy, powers are separated and operate on the basis of balance and control. The government, Malaj said, must be held accountable for the reforms it promises and implement them through the law, not through public pressure on independent institutions.

Speaking about the justice reform, Malaj emphasized that it was not only the product of the will of a political force, but the result of a forced consensus and the strong influence of Albania's strategic partners, the US and the European Union.
