Reportage/ From the attitude of the people of Ležia, to the "Italian

"Il Giornale" has made a report on the Rama-Meloni pact for refugees traveling from Tirana to Gjadër....

In Shengjin, 70 km from Tirana and a handful of nautical miles from Bari, an Afghan refugee willing to talk stops to speak in English, under the signs of the "Rafaelo" resort.

He arrived here in 2021, fleeing his country before the last American he worked for left Kabul. Returned Kosovars and Albanians come here in the summer, says the man who lives there with his wife and two wide-eyed children.

We are a few minutes' walk from the port of Shengjin, a place he showed us while playing volleyball on the beach. There is an obstacle at the entrance. We get closer, our mouths close, we can't pass. We go to the hill behind the port, among the pines and pomegranates that have grown between the wreckage of two Soviet trucks and what remains of some military buildings. We go there by car, rented not far from a salesman more interested in his chickens than cars, accompanied by a silent Albanian friend of his who offered to accompany us.

This is the place identified by the agreement between Giorgia Meloni and Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, where the ships of the Italian Navy will land with their cargo of desperate people.

In the spring of 2024 this area will be an Italian enclave, staffed by our law enforcement agencies to take care of the disembarkation and identification procedures of those seeking asylum in Europe who will then be transferred to the former military airport of Gjadri, not far from here. "I will accompany you because it is a military zone", our Cicero tells us, as confirmed by the camouflaged soldier who stops us at the gate, under the inscription "Stop! Military zone".

A few American flags on the road, a NATO flag, nothing reminiscent of communist traces. That regime is a memory, ugly and distant. "We have experienced communism. One thing is certain: he could go back anywhere in the East, but not here", the gas pumpman tells us with a smile, to whom we complain about the price of oil, more than two euros per liter at the exchange rate with the Albanian lek. .

The military airport has been out of use since the 1990s, recalls a farmer who grazes his three cows nearby: "Nothing has flown from here since then," he says. But our guardian angel, an ex-soldier we like, shakes his head. "It's not true," he smiles but adds nothing else. There are very few houses around.

In Tirana, Rama, who was unavailable yesterday due to the mourning of the President of the Republic of Albania Bajram Begaj who lost his mother, is not liked by everyone.

A character, like Matteo Renzi (with whom he gets along very well), who does not like the Albanian right at all. "On corruption and rights, the list of things to do is long. It is not wrong to help Italy, I owe a lot to your country where I came in 1991, but we need a European solution. If the memorandum foresees the detention center, I don't agree", Albanian opposition deputy Agron Shehaj tells us, certainly not soft on Rama: "He is anything but a leftist, he is a little Balkan despot who has sold himself. Very good. Albanians are running away from corruption, there are 50 thousand a year and Rama will be the Rwanda of Europe?", says the conservative, recalling the recent rejection of the British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's plan for transfers to Africa.

"The workforce is essential for us, that's why we need new immigrants", explains Kulla, according to which the problem is wages and the jobs that young Albanians don't want to do anymore, so much so that the government has increased the salaries of the sector's employees public.

"They go to Germany and England, our doctors and nurses are in great demand", here workers and servants are needed for the young oligarchs. And to help Albania enter a Europe that will look to the West and the East, like the eagle, symbol of the Albanian flag. /Adapted "Pamphlet" from " il Giornale "
