Rinderpest has returned to the Shkodra region after nearly a year, affecting the administrative unit of Dajçi.
After confirming the first case this year, the Ministry of Agriculture has ordered the quarantine of the area, within a perimeter of 3 to 10 kilometers.
The case was discovered in the village of Mali i Gjymtit in Dajç, where about 20 sheep belonging to farmer Sokol Volaj were buried, while about 60 other small animals that he keeps on the farm are expected to be destroyed.
The disease has been officially confirmed for three days. The farmer states that the economic damage is estimated at 10 to 15 million old lek, while he expects compensation for the losses caused.
The administrator of Dajçi, Broz Pjetrani, said that there are suspicions of other cases of plague in the area and that further checks and analyses will be carried out on small livestock.
Meanwhile, the Regional Directorate of Agricultural Extension in Shkodra has launched inspections in other areas as well, due to the risk of the disease spreading.
Authorities explain that the plague affects animals, but is not transmitted to humans.
Last year, three similar cases were identified in the Shkodra region, which led to the destruction of affected livestock and the placement of areas in quarantine according to legal deadlines.
