The Competition Authority has announced that it has begun monitoring the bread sales market, following reports regarding the announcement of price increases by bread production and trading companies in the city of Korça.
According to the information made public, enterprises have communicated to points of sale that the price of bread will increase from 120 lek to 150 lek, reflecting a simultaneous increase of over 25 percent.
In accordance with Law No. 9121/2003 "On the Protection of Competition", the Competition Authority announced that it has immediately launched on-site inspections to verify whether this notice is being implemented by the companies and whether this behavior constitutes an abusive practice in violation of the legislation in force.
The institution emphasizes that the law prohibits any agreement that has as its object or effect the prevention, restriction or distortion of competition in the market, especially agreements that directly or indirectly determine purchase or sale prices, as well as any other trading conditions.
The Competition Authority also emphasizes that violating the law "On the Protection of Competition" constitutes an administrative offense and may be sanctioned with a fine of up to 10 percent of the turnover of the previous financial year for enterprises involved in illegal agreements.
