The Italian Prime Minister spoke about a migrant detained at a repatriation center in Albania and warns that justice reform is essential...
"Where are the feminists?" This is the question that Giorgia Meloni raises regarding the recent decisions of the judges. Speaking on RTL 102.5 radio, the Italian prime minister focused on the migration file and used this occasion to put in the spotlight, according to her, the problems of the justice system.
Meloni also published details of the criminal history of one of these migrants. In this context, Meloni said that he has been convicted of drug trafficking, resistance to a public official, sexual violence in collaboration and gang rape.
" The judges do not confirm the detention because he has filed a request for international protection. A person who has entered Italy illegally, has started dealing in drug trafficking, has gang-raped a woman, we cannot keep him detained, we cannot send him to Albania and we cannot repatriate him", she explained, referring to the case of Fathalla Ouardi. Repatriation is almost impossible and we almost have to grant him international protection. I ask: how can we guarantee the safety of citizens in this way? ", said Meloni.
The 39-year-old Moroccan national, accused of drug trafficking, illegal entry into Italy and theft, and convicted of sexual violence in collaboration and in a group, was sent on 17 February from Palazzo San Gervasio (Potenza) to the CPR repatriation centre in Gjadra, Albania, for repatriation. However, he was “rescued” by the Rome Court of Appeal after he filed an application for international protection.
The Prime Minister further highlighted this issue by mentioning a case in Florence, where a woman was raped by two immigrants.
" What happened in Florence shows how unclear these decisions are and how much they affect not only the work of the government, but also the rights of citizens, above all the right to security. What confidence can a woman who has been gang-raped have if her rapist cannot even be deported from the country? " Meloni added.
She articulated a criticism of feminist movements that, according to her, have not reacted: "I also ask where the feminists of 'Non una di meno' are about these events."
Meloni stressed that the government does not intend to remain passive. She said that the project for migrant centers in Albania “is continuing,” although, according to her, there is a possibility that some judges will find other reasons to block it.
"I am determined to do what citizens have asked us to do, namely a strict policy against irregular migration, even with new instruments such as centers in Albania, despite the fact that there are those who try to prevent this. For this, I am determined and I am ready to work threefold, fourfold, tenfold if necessary," she declared.
The Prime Minister also spoke about the referendum on justice. Meloni stressed that "reforming justice is essential" to "make this country modern."
"The paradox is that so far it has never been achieved and I think that, if we don't manage to do it this time, we won't have another chance ," she concluded.
