
Ministers from the region have signed a joint statement on fighting corruption in Southeast Europe through the confiscation and digitization of assets, on Thursday during the OSCE Ministerial Council, which is being held in Skopje, North Macedonia on November 30 and December 1.
" Collaborative efforts are essential to effectively address this complex challenge. Recognizing that corruption knows no borders, the signatories pledge to work together to prevent, investigate and prosecute corruption across South East Europe. Only through collective actions can we make significant progress in eradicating corruption" , the approved statement says.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of North Macedonia, Bujar Osmani, said that corruption threatens security and economic well-being and that signing the declaration means their commitment "at the highest possible level".
" By signing the declaration, we emphasize our determination and unconditional commitment to work together to prevent corruption in Southeast Europe. We will fight against corruption resolutely through financial investigations and digitalization" , said Osmani.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Serbia, Ivica Dacic, emphasized the importance of international cooperation "so that the fight against corruption is possible".
" We call ourselves champions of corruption, but we are not. Where there is money there is corruption. Taking a provision in the west is legal, but there is corruption here. I'm sorry they don't sign this, they should do it first ," he said.
The Serbian minister accused the West of corruption saying that "I doubt that we are more corrupt than them. I just want them not to give us lessons from the side."
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Elmedin Konakovic, said that corruption is a "political reality in the Balkans and that is why people are moving".
The head of Montenegrin diplomacy, Filip Ivanovic, said that the OSCE should strengthen its role in the fight against corruption and crime, while his counterpart from Albania, Igli Hasani, said that this fight should be a priority and there remains political will for it. done something more in this field./ REL
