Nearly 100 children between the ages of 0 and 18 are diagnosed with a tumor disease in the country each year. Acute leukemia is the most common form, accounting for about 30 percent of cases. It is followed by tumors of the central nervous system and kidneys.
On World Pediatric Cancer Day, doctors are emphasizing the importance of early identification of signs. They explain that symptoms are often confused with other common diseases, which delays diagnosis and leads some patients to advanced stages by the time they present to the hospital.
Specialists also identify factors related to the period of pregnancy. According to them, the mother's lifestyle during this time affects the baby's development and may be linked to the appearance of tumor pathologies at an early age.
The country lacks a complete pediatric cancer registry. This situation is also related to the fact that a number of families choose to seek treatment abroad, seeking more specialized services.
Oncohematologists at the University Hospital of Kosovo emphasize that structured follow-up and the initiation of treatment without delay significantly increase the chances of recovery. They call for greater cooperation for the timely identification and treatment of cases.
