A 54-year-old woman has died in a private hospital in Durres a day after undergoing surgery for a narrowing of the stomach. The incident has sparked reactions and questions, while family members are demanding a full explanation of the circumstances. The operation was performed on May 20 and according to medical staff, everything had gone well until the early hours of the next morning, when the patient suffered a fatal cardiac arrest.
The doctor who performed the operation, Ilir Shani, has issued a lengthy response, attempting to clarify his and the hospital's position. He emphasizes that the operation was completed without complications and the patient's condition was stable, with vital parameters continuously monitored. According to him, the patient was in good condition, communicating and moving normally.
"Unfortunately, at dawn on the 21st, the patient suffered a sudden cardiac arrest, a consequence of a massive acute infarction... efforts to bring her back to life were unsuccessful," Shani writes, adding that there was no clinical warning to indicate such a situation.
In his statement, Shani distances himself from any responsibility for any negligence or professional error, insisting that everything was done according to protocols. He promises full cooperation with investigative bodies to shed light on every aspect of the incident.
"We understand and feel the family's pain and are ready to offer full cooperation with the relevant bodies, which will shed light on every aspect of this event," he concluded the reaction.
Doctor's reaction:
Following the serious incident that occurred two days ago on the premises of our hospital, I feel it is my moral and professional duty to provide a clarification on our position as a healthcare institution and my own personally as the responsible physician.
First, on behalf of the medical staff and on my own behalf, I express my most sincere family condolences to the family of the late V.XH. This loss is deeply painful for all of us, as the deceased was not only a patient, but also a close acquaintance of ours for whom we had special respect. We share the pain and stand by the family in this difficult moment.
As the responsible physician, I feel obligated to clarify the circumstances of this sad event, guided by the principle of transparency towards family members and citizens.
Patient V.XH underwent gastric bypass surgery on 20.05.2025. The operation was completed normally and the patient was transferred to the ward in good condition. During the following hours, her condition was continuously monitored and the vital parameters were within the normal range. The patient was active, moving, communicating, and had no concerns.
Unfortunately, in the early hours of the 21st, the patient suffered a sudden cardiac arrest, the result of a massive acute infarction, and passed away within minutes. Although medical assistance was provided immediately, the stroke proved fatal and efforts to bring her back to life were unsuccessful.
On behalf of myself and all the staff who were involved in the patient's treatment, I express my deepest regret for this loss. We understand and feel the pain of the family and are ready to offer full cooperation to the relevant authorities, which will shed light on every aspect of this event.
