Skënder Hitaj has taken over the leadership of the State Police, placing himself at the center of public and political attention since his first days in office.
His appointment comes after the departure of Ilir Proda, after the latter allowed violence in the opposition protest, but the blue headquarters has not spared accusations against the new leader.
Criminalistics expert, Ervin Karamuço, has linked this situation to the clash between the professional and political aspects.
"There are two sides to the dismissals: the political and the professional aspect. The number of murders and criminal offenses have decreased due to management and methodologies... we have a very good performance ," he said on "Abc News".
According to him, police leaders, including current ones, often become the target of political attacks.
"Today's opposition attacks him on political issues because they find no connection to gangs," Karamuço declared, implying that criticism of the leaders is not based on concrete evidence.
He stressed that the tense political climate and public pressure directly affect decision-making. “The situation was very heated and the arrows that the government was taking… led to this change for calm,” he said.
Hitaj took over the police at a challenging moment, where in addition to managing order and security, he is also expected to face political pressure and high public expectations.
