The Chairman of the Supreme State Audit Office, Arben Shehu, raised concerns in Parliament today that the Auditors of the Supreme State Audit Office are being prevented by public institutions from accessing their database for auditing. The Head of the SAI did not mention by name which public institutions these are.
Responding to MPs' concerns about the extension of audit deadlines beyond the legal deadlines, Shehu said that this extension was not the fault of the auditors, but of the institutions under audit.
"We have audits in process and we cannot move forward due to the denial of access to the institution under audit, " Shehu said in the Economy Committee, adding that this is a blockage of the legal process without any logic or answer.
Asked by opposition MPs what solution Shehu suggested to address the problem and whether there was anything the Assembly could do to prevent state officials from evading legal responsibility.
Shehu said that the law is clear, but it is not being implemented and therefore emphasized that the ALSAI would resort to institutional channels for concrete cases of obstruction of the work of auditors.
" The law is clear, the need is for its implementation, " replied the head of the SAI.
