Akeks Nika, Ziver Veizit, Faik Myrtaj and Hekuran Deda were killed during the protest.
Today marks 15 years since January 21, 2011, when during a Socialist Party protest, on "Martyrs of the Nation" Boulevard, in front of the Prime Minister's Office, four protesters were killed by the Republican Guard.
Akeks Nika, Ziver Veizit, Faik Myrtaj and Hekuran Deda were killed during the protest. The four victims of January 21, 2011 were declared Martyrs of the Homeland.
The families of the victims of January 21st now have their eyes on SPAK, which has launched investigations into one of the most serious events in our country during the government of Sali Berisha.
The decision of the Strasbourg Court, which called it a state crime, paved the way for investigations by SPAK, registering criminal proceedings on July 15, 2024, even after a decision of the Supreme Court, for 3 criminal offenses: "Murder in other qualifying circumstances", committed in collaboration, against two or more persons and in a manner dangerous to the lives of many persons, "Abuse of office", committed in collaboration, and "Committing actions that impede the discovery of the truth", committed in collaboration. Now SPAK will shed light on the role of former Prime Minister Sali Berisha, former Minister of Interior Lulzim Basha, former head of the Guard Ndrea Prendit and others.
SPAK has begun questioning for the January 21 file, where so far the former Director General of the State Police, Hysni Burgaj, his deputy Agron Kuliçaj, SP MP Xhemal Qefalia, as well as Saimir Tahiri have been questioned.
Criminal proceedings have been registered for the murder of Aleks Nika and the injury of three other protesters, Artes Dybeli, Ilia Qesko and Ilia Papa, but if the charges are proven and it is proven that the guard was ordered to switch from dummy bullets to real bullets by Sali Berisha or Lulzim Basha, the punishment will be given for all the lives lost, as a state crime!
The protest that ended in tragedy
On January 21, 2011, the socialist opposition called for citizens to protest, following the Meta-Prifti video scandal, which spoke of a corruption affair. Protesters gathered in front of the Prime Minister's Office, calling for the then Prime Minister Sali Berisha to be removed.
But when the crowd attempted to enter the courtyard of the Prime Minister's Office, the situation became tense and gunfire soon broke out from inside. The bullets left behind four victims: Hekuran Deda, Ziver Veiz, Faik Myrtaj, and Aleks Nikaj.
Sali Berisha accused the Socialist Party of wanting to stage a coup against him, while the opposition accused the Prime Minister and the Minister of Interior of ordering the murders.
The first investigation brought Ndrea Prendi and Agim Llupo as defendants in the incident. The court assessed that the murders of Ziver Veizi, Faik Myrtaj and Hekuran Dedaj occurred due to negligence and sentenced the former commander of the Guard, Ndrea Prendi, to one year in prison, and the guard, Agim Llupo, to 3 years.
