A day after Independence Day celebrations, Albania commemorates today the 81st anniversary of its Liberation from Nazi invaders. As every year, the highest state figures are expected to pay homage at the Cemetery of the Nation's Martyrs, honoring the sacrifice and heroism of those who fought for freedom.
The activities that began yesterday for the 113th anniversary of Independence throughout the country will continue today as part of Liberation Day.
Albania was liberated from fascist and Nazi forces on November 28, 1944, after a five-year period of occupation that began with the Italian fascist aggression on April 7, 1939. After Italy's capitulation in the fall of 1943, the country fell under German control.
During this period, the formations of the National Liberation Army grew significantly in both number and organization, waging important battles in all regions of the country. The peak of the resistance was reached in the fall of 1944, when a series of operations liberated major cities such as Berat, Korça, and Elbasan.
Tirana was liberated on November 17, 1944, after 19 days of fierce urban fighting, while Shkodra and the northern area were liberated on November 29, marking the final departure of German forces from Albanian territory.
Historians often emphasize that Albania was among the few countries in Southeast Europe that managed to liberate itself mainly with its own forces, thanks to a broad anti-fascist movement and a consolidated network of national liberation councils.
Meanwhile, during this period, hundreds of Albanians sheltered Jews fleeing Nazi massacres, making Albania the only country in Europe to emerge from the war with more saved Jews than it had before it.
