Albanian students in North Macedonia have held a protest in Skopje, opposing the conduct of the bar exam primarily in the Macedonian language, despite the official status of the Albanian language in the country.
The protest was accompanied by banners in the center of the capital, where one of the main messages was: “Law on paper, discrimination in practice.” A significant number of students participated in the rally.
The jurisprudence exam, necessary for practicing legal professions as a lawyer, judge or prosecutor, according to students, is in practice conducted mainly in the Macedonian language, creating difficulties for Albanian candidates.
According to them, this situation constitutes a direct obstacle and creates inequality in access to the legal professions, also affecting the representation of Albanians in the judicial system.
Students demand that the exam be conducted entirely in the Albanian language, with equal procedures for all candidates and with effective implementation of linguistic rights guaranteed by law.
The University of Tirana has also reacted to this. Rector Artan Hoxha says that the University of Tirana appeals for the relevant institutions to respect the law and find a fair and comprehensive solution.
"The University of Tirana expresses its full support for Albanian students in North Macedonia, who are seeking the realization of a fundamental right: the use of their mother tongue in educational and professional processes.
The right to be educated and assessed in their mother tongue is not a privilege, but an internationally recognized standard and an essential element of real equality in a multilingual society. When students pursue their studies in a certain language, it is a legitimate right that the final professional assessment also be carried out in the same language.
The request of Albanian students to take state exams in Albanian represents a legitimate aspiration for equality, dignity and non-discrimination. Failure to respect this principle risks creating unnecessary obstacles to their professional development and undermining trust in state institutions.
The University of Tirana supports every effort aimed at strengthening linguistic rights and guaranteeing equal standards in education and public life. We encourage the relevant institutions to find, in the spirit of law and democratic coexistence, "fair and inclusive solutions.
Respecting linguistic diversity is not only a legal obligation, but also a value that enriches society and strengthens social cohesion on the path of the region's integration into the European Union," the UT announcement states.
