The European Union Ambassador to Tirana, Silvio Gonzato, has emphasized that credible electoral processes in line with international standards remain a key priority on Albania's path towards EU membership.
Speaking about the meeting with the two co-chairs of the Special Parliamentary Committee on Electoral Reform, Damian Gjiknuri and Oerd Bylykbashi, Gonzata said that the focus was on the work of the committee in the coming weeks and the importance of advancing electoral reform.
The Ambassador underlined that the reform should aim to increase transparency in the financing of political parties, guarantee the independence of the electoral administration, and prevent the misuse of state resources during electoral processes.
“Credible electoral processes, in line with international standards, remain a key priority on Albania’s path towards EU membership. Yesterday I met with the two co-chairs of the Special Parliamentary Committee on Electoral Reform, Damian Gjiknuri and Oerd Bylykbashi, to discuss the work of the committee in the coming weeks.
I underlined the importance of electoral reform to increase transparency in the financing of political parties, to guarantee the independence of the election administration and to prevent the misuse of state resources. A comprehensive reform of electoral rules, including the implementation of OSCE/ODIHR recommendations, is essential to guarantee public trust and to protect the integrity of the upcoming elections ”, Sivio Gonzato, Ambassador of the Delegation of the European Union to Albania.
The European Union has consistently considered electoral reform as one of the essential elements within the framework of Albania's integration process, linking it to the strengthening of the rule of law and democratic standards in the country.
