Young people leave and do not "want" to work in the country,

Younger age groups are declining at a much faster rate than the general population due to high levels of immigration, aging trends and falling birthrates.

These developments, together with the growing demand from businesses for employees, should logically reduce the level of unemployment among the young generation, but on the contrary, unemployment among young people is taking on worrying proportions.

Official INSTAT data show that the population in the 15-29 age group recorded an annual decrease of 4.6% in January 2023, reaching a total of 587,888 people from 643,059 in January 2022.

In paradox with these developments, unemployment in the 15-29 age group increased for the third consecutive quarter in January-March 2023, where 76,597 unemployed youth were reported with an annual increase of 8.8%.

Official INSTAT data shows that unemployment in the 15-29 age group was at its highest level since the first quarter of 2019 when 79,747 unemployed youths were reported.

The official unemployment rate for young people aged 15-29 was 22.5% in the first 3 months. Compared to the first quarter of 2022, the youth unemployment rate has increased by 1.8 percentage points. Compared to the fourth quarter of 2022, this indicator has increased by 1.0 percentage points.

Demographic and employment trends for young people are showing that the country's economic model is not generating opportunities for the young age group. In January 2023 there were 27,464 fewer young people aged 15-29, which means that a large empty space was created by young people, but on the other hand more than 6,200 young people joined the army than were unemployed. .

Although most businesses are on the alert for employees and have listed their lack as the main difficulty in recent years, the integration of young people into the labor market remains a worrying issue.

Labor market experts explain that the offer for jobs is currently focused on low skills such as service workers in tourism hotels, cleaners, bartenders, waiters or workers in the processing industry in clothing factories, etc. However, young people who are increasingly aspiring to emigrate and are reluctant to work in these job positions.

Today's young people start their preparation at school and invest to be employed in European markets, as many Albanian businesses are trying to import employees from abroad.

The increase in living costs from the high prices of food to real estate and on the other hand the lack of opportunities for high-value employment increases the premises for further emigration among young people./Monitor
