Jared Kushner's decision to withdraw from the Belgrade development plan for Aleksandar Vučić's party will deprive Serbia of much-needed foreign investment. According to the SNS, other Balkan states will benefit as a result.
Kushner's US-based Affinity Global Development told the Wall Street Journal last week that it was withdrawing from a project to build a hotel, apartments, shops and offices on the site of the former Yugoslav army headquarters in Belgrade.
The American firm signed a 99-year lease with the Serbian government last year, but the project has faced opposition. However, the plans, which were backed by Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, have been embroiled in a corruption scandal and have led to protests by Serbs.
Last week, Serbia's prosecutor filed an indictment against three officials, including a minister, for their role in removing the buildings' protected status this year, a move that had allowed the project to move forward but which prosecutors allege was done illegally.
"They (the protesters) drove away investors. This is the most negative message for investors. They have sent Americans to the Albanian coast ," Milos Vucevic, the leader of Serbia's ruling SNS party, told Prva TV on Monday, Reuters reports.
