Just two months after being declared "Honorary Citizen" of Lushnja, Gjergji Velo officially lost the title after a new decision by the Municipal Council, which returned the case for reconsideration due to the lack of complete information from the Records Authority.
With 23 votes in favor, 4 against and 8 abstentions, the councilors decided to cancel the initial decision, amid strong political controversy. The first decision had met with strong resistance from the Democratic Party and right-wing councilors, who considered Velo a dark figure from the communist past.
Gjergji Velo, former chairman of the Lushnja Committee during the communist regime, is accused of having signed decisions that helped in the persecution of political opponents, especially in the city of Lushnja, known for the large number of exiles and political persecuted.
After the vote, DP MP Saimir Korreshi reacted, calling this an act of moral justice for the politically persecuted and a symbolic step to cleanse public memory from the glorification of figures from the past regime.
"The dignity of the persecuted and interned in the city of Lushnja was put in place. To respect the left-wing councilors who voted to remove the title of comrade Velo, giving a lesson to the Municipality as well," declared Korreshi.
He publicly demanded an official apology from the Municipality, as well as the removal of photos and materials from the title award ceremony, describing this as an undermining of the dignity of the victims of communism.
