Protests for Bashkim Ulajt resort
Residents of Velipoja at the doors of SPAK

Residents of the village of Rrjoll, in the Velipojë administrative unit of Shkodra, have appeared before the Special Prosecutor's Office (SPAK), after three days of protests against the construction of a luxury resort owned by oligarch Bashkim Ulaj.

Residents are demanding an immediate halt to the works, claiming that the investment is being carried out on their inherited lands. Meanwhile, with banners in their hands, residents of the area are demanding justice. "We want justice," is one of their main calls in front of the doors of SPAK.

According to the residents, this is the second time they have contacted SPAK. On March 25 of last year, they filed a criminal complaint against the construction company and several individuals, who are suspected of having forged property documents in the Baks-Rrjoll area.

The protest in Velipojë has continued for several days. During these days, there have been clashes with the police, who have removed residents from the road where construction work for the tourist resort has begun.

According to the project, the complex will cover an area of about 146 hectares, being considered one of the largest tourism investments in the country.
Massive rock fall

The Kukës-Bushtricë axis has traffic problems

During the night, the entire Kukës region was hit by moderate rainfall, accompanied by occasional winds. The unstable weather created difficulties on several road axes, mainly in mountainous areas.

The rain continued until the early hours of Thursday morning and gradually stopped. As a result, rocks and debris fell from the slopes in some segments, temporarily hindering vehicle movement.

The most significant problem was identified on the Kukës-Bushtricë road axis, where rockfalls and landslides were recorded in the early hours of the day. The situation made it difficult for vehicles to move until the intervention of the responsible structures.

After the alerts, road maintenance contractors immediately intervened with vehicles and manpower, clearing the blocked segments. Currently, the national axis Kukës-Peshkopi is normally trafficable, while drivers are advised to exercise increased caution.

Will the case go to trial?
The GJKKO holds a preliminary hearing for Meta today

A preliminary hearing is being held at the Special Court Against Corruption and Organized Crime against the leader of the Freedom Party, Ilir Meta, and his ex-wife, Monika Kryemadhi. In this hearing, the trial panel will decide whether or not the case will proceed to trial.

The hearing follows the developments of the previous hearing, which lasted about eight hours and was accompanied by verbal clashes between Ilir Meta and SPAK prosecutor Sotir Kllapi. During that hearing, the prosecutor managed to read only 90 pages of the request for the case to go to trial, while about 100 more pages remain to be presented.

The Special Prosecution Office closed the investigations on July 28, 2025, within the framework of the file related to the CEZ-DIA affair, the LSI lobbying in the United States of America, and the property investigation. According to SPAK, Ilir Meta and Monika Kryemadhi are accused of passive corruption, money laundering, and failure to declare assets.

Rama's luxurious trip to Israel

Private jet seized from former cryptocurrency billionaire

In Albania, once an isolated and still poor country where only a small group of people traveled abroad for decades, the symbolism of using a private plane is stronger, especially when these trips are made by public officials like Prime Minister Edi Rama, often away from the prying eyes of the public.

The long-serving Albanian leader's last trip on a three-day state visit to Israel on the occasion of his participation in the International Conference on Combating Anti-Semitism was carried out via the 'Bombardier Global 5000' aircraft, once owned by Sam Bankman Fried, an American entrepreneur convicted of fraud and money laundering.

This is not the first time that Rama has used a private jet for his official trips. For years, he used an Airbus A319-100 in VIP configuration from the flag carrier 'Air Albania', named 'Ismail', in honor of the founder of the Albanian state, Ismail Bey Vlora.

Representatives of the majority argue that the use of a "government plane" for official trips by the prime minister is related to the "dignity" of the Albanian state and its representation in the international arena.

Rama's critics from the opposition think the opposite, emphasizing that the dignity enjoyed by a public official, whether at home or abroad, is not related to the luxury of the means of transportation used by him.
