We invite you to follow the informative edition with the main developments from the country, the region and the world until this afternoon, where among other things we highlight:
Prime Minister Edi Rama has accepted US President Donald Trump's invitation to become part of the international "Peace Board" initiative, which aims to manage post-conflicts and stability in affected areas, such as Gaza.
Through a letter and post on X, Rama underlines that Albania stands by the US in efforts for global peace and security. After approval by the Council of Ministers, the accession requires ratification in the Assembly, where Socialist MPs have been warned to be present.
Meanwhile, the former head of the Anti-Corruption Court, Irena Gjoka, risks exclusion from the justice system for concealing a conviction in Greece. The opposition demands an immediate investigation and criminal charges, questioning her decisions in SPAK. Chief negotiator Majlinda Dhuka also stressed the need for Albania to meet the conditions for EU membership by 2027, including reforms in the judiciary, the fight against corruption, social equality and increased transparency in lobbying and the media.
In the field of parliamentary politics, the opposition has opposed the exclusion of MPs from plenary sessions and committees, considering the decision as political and dictated. Also, 15 years are commemorated from the massacre of January 21, 2011, where SPAK has registered criminal proceedings following the decision of the Supreme Court and Strasbourg to investigate those responsible.
On the other hand, RTSH risks closure or privatization due to poor financial management, while the government plans to triple the television tax for families and businesses, to increase the institution's budget by over 55 million euros. The Assembly is opening a "Media Hub" with integrated artificial intelligence services to increase parliamentary transparency.
In terms of crime and security, SPAK has communicated the accusation of abuse of office against former mayor Elvis Roshi for tenders of the Municipality of Kavaja, while a conflict over a car scratch in Fushë-Krujë-Mamurras ended tragically with the murder of Petrit Ndout. The international operation “STURL ONE” destroyed an Albanian-Italian drug trafficking organization, arresting nine people and seizing large quantities of cocaine, hashish and marijuana.
Internationally, the Trump-Starmer tensions and the Chagos Islands and Greenland issues demonstrate the changing nature of the historic US-UK relationship. Trump criticizes the Labour government for undermining Western interests, while Starmer demands independence and coordination, turning the “special relationship” into a more transactional one, conditioned by the temperament of the US president.
