Fredi Beleri's brother, Leonardo Beleri, has stated that the elected mayor of Himara was asked to give up the municipality in exchange for freedom.
"From the first day of his arrest until today, the only suggestion that has been made to Fred is the loss of the Himara Municipality. That is, to declare his resignation in order to gain freedom, he told the Greek media ERT.
Leonardo Beleri said that they expected his brother's prison sentence, adding that this was the intention of the Rama government.
"He was waiting for this decision. "Unfortunately, from the first moment the intention of the Rama government was for Himara Municipality to remain in the same hands", he said, adding that he has not been able to contact his brother, as they did not allow him.
But as he emphasized, "from now on we will follow all legal procedures. We will go to the Court of Appeal, then we will go to the Supreme Court and then we will go to the European courts, where the acquittal of Mayor Himara will be certain".
"All this takes time and unfortunately the Albanian authorities are playing very well with time", he declared, as he commented on the actions and procedures from the Greek side and the Foreign Ministry, where he said:
"I don't know the details of the procedures, whatever was done did not bring results. Unfortunately, the punishment of the mayor of Himara came. Without entering into the process of judging whether things were done right or wrong".
He predicted that "the sentence of the mayor of Himara will also follow in the Court of Appeals, which may reduce his sentence, but Fredi Beler is not so interested in whether his sentence will be reduced or increased.
They demand that he be convicted on appeal, be defamed, automatically lose the municipality. This was their plan from the beginning and so far it seems to be working out. Basically my brother spent 15 months in prison. He is released from prison at Christmas.
But he does not take the role of mayor. If in the appeal he is sentenced for even one hour, he automatically loses the Municipality and loses his political rights for a certain period of time, this is determined by the court".
And he predicted that "then maybe they will announce new elections".
